Prana is our vital life force ~ the energy that pulses through the body along a network of subtle body channels.
It is related to the breath but not the breath! Each direction of flow is responsible for different functions in the body:

Prana

Inward and downward moving; responsible for respiration and functions of the heart; seated in the Anahata (heart) chakra

Apana

Downward and out moving; governs elimination; seated in the Muladhara (root) chakra

Samana

Centre to peripherals; responsible for digestion, assimilation and absorption; seated in the Manipura (solar plexus) chakra

Udana

Upward and out moving; responsible for speech, sensories, sleep, kundalini rising; seated in the Vishuddha (throat) chakra

Vyana

From peripherals to centre, responsible for circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems
