Prana is our vital life force ~ the energy that pulses through the body along a network of subtle body channels. It is related to the breath but not the breath! Each direction of flow is responsible for different functions in the body:
Prana - inward and downward moving; responsible for respiration and functions of the heart; seated in the Anahata (heart) chakra
Apana - downward and out moving; governs elimination; seated in the Muladhara (root) chakra
Samana - centre to peripherals; responsible for digestion, assimilation nd absorption; seated in the Manipura (solar plexus) chakra
Udana - Upward and out moving; responsible for speech, sensories, sleep, kundalini rising; seated in the Vishuddha (throat) chakra
Vyana - from peripherals to centre, responsible for circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems
